House of Representatives Session

Please watch the following video of The House of Representative November 17th Session. In the comment area below please write down some thoughts about the video. Be specific so I know you are definitely watching the video. It is 4 hours long so I suggest you skip and fast forward some parts instead of watching the whole 4 hours (I do not expect you to watch the whole thing)

Things to keep in mind:

How is is structured (a session)?
What are they discussing that day?
Is there anything unique or did you learn anything new in the video about the HOR?
Who is speaking? What are their names and titles?
How does HOR chamber in Capital Hill look (description)

  1. The session started off by the speaker of the house, Republican John A Boehner, introducing the House Chaplain. The House Chaplain, Rev. Patrick J. Conroy, then led the house in prayer. Then The Speaker of the house introduced the governor of California. The governor of California led the pledge of allegiance. Then the session started of with Republican Joe Wilson of South Carolina. He was speaking about the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2012. Then Democrat David Cicillina of Rhode Island spoke about the veterans and the support we need to give them. All together the session was very boring. I did, although find it interesting that the people speaking are not facing the speaker of the house which I see as disrespectful. This is also ironic considering they all just rose to greet him as he entered the room.

  2. The first part of the session involved Republican John A. Boehner (speaker of the house) introducing the House Chaplain. This was Rev. Patrick J. Conroy who initiated a prayer in the house. After this, the speaker of the house welcomed the governor of California (who began the pledge of allegiance). Next, Republican Joe Wilson from South Carolina talked about the terrorism which took place on September 11, 2012. Finally, Democrat David Cicillina (Rhode Island) discussed the veterans and the support citizens should give them. To finish with, the meeting was not very interesting, and I did not like the way the people communicate with the speaker of the house. The fact that they have their backs to the speaker makes it difficult to fully grasp the meanings of their points, and it can be difficult for complete progress to be made.

  4. in the beginning the speaker of the house comes out and introduces the house chaplan who says a prayer and the speaker comes back and govenor of california discussed the terorism actions that happened on 9/11/12 and then DAvid Cicillina of rhode island discussed the veterans and support from the citizens to end the meeting the speaker of the house ended. i thought it was really boring and no one listened to each other their back was always towards the person talking and they kind of all seemed uninterested. they were kind of disrespecting their own colleagues

  5. After the House Chaplain said the prayer and they did the pledge of allegiance, the representatives gave one minute speeches mentioning what they wanted to discuss. Rep. Ted Poe and Rep. Patrick Meehan spoke about how they feel Israel should be supported. Rep Joe Courtney and Rep. Tim Walz spoke about a farm bill that will regulate costs. The House Reading Clerk read about the HR 6156, which they are speaking about and debating. Rep. Judy Biggert was Speaker pro tempore, and the room looks like a courtroom.

  6. John A. Boehner, speaker of the house, introduces House Chaplin Rev. Patrick J. Conry to say a prayer. I feel this is unnecessary and that religion should not be involved in politics, especially congress. Senator Burton of Indiana suggested consideration of the bill which would allow equal to trading with Russia. Senator Lehtinen of Florida approved of passing the bill due because of her belief on human rights. The HOR chamber in Capital Hill looks exactly how I pictured it, with higher seat for the speaker of the house with all of his subordinates below him, facing his direction.

  7. The speaker of the house introduced Chaplin and then a prayer was said. I found this a little weird because of the whole separation of church and government. I don't think any kind of religion should be involved in the government or politics. They mentioned the terrorist actions in the middle east that happened in September. Most of the representatives gave short speeches and talked about what they wanted to discuss. Rep Earl Blumenauer talked about the library of Congress. They also talked about how they wanted to stay true to human rights.

  8. First Rev. Patrick J. Conry said a prayer. The speaker of the house, Republican John A Boehner, started the session by introducing the House Chaplain. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by the governor of California. Then, Republican Joe Wilson from South Carolina spoke about the terrorism that took place on September 11, 2012. I just skimmed through this, but the parts I did see were very boring. No one was paying attention the speaker. The people were being very rude because they had their backs turned to the speaker.

  9. In the beginning, the speaker of the house introduces Rev. Patrick J. Comry. He then says a prayer for the assembly. Then the speaker announced approval of the journal. Next the pledge of allegiance was said. Some of the representatives gave speeches about what they stood for. The HOR chamber is positioned that the speaker is up high and all of the representatives are seated below him. The house debated on H.R 6156, they then went back to the authorization of Nondiscriminatory treatment to products of the Russian federation and Moldova.

  10. In the beginning of the session Rev. Patrick J. Conry said a prayer. The house than said the Pledge of Allegiance. Each side was able to make a 1 minute speech. Rep. Patrick Meehan of Pennsylvania spoke about supporting Israel. Rockets were launched from Ganza into Israel within 48 hours. They stand with Israel to defend itself. From Michigan, Rep. Dave Camp spoke about American workers benefiting from Russia. We can not afford to pass up our export. I found this session pretty boring. I also wondered why the speakers had their backs to the speaker of the house. I did picture the session to look similar to this.

  11. The session was run by speaker of the house, Republican John A Boehner. The session began with a prayer. Boehner chose each representative to speak and told them how long they could speak. He would chose a Republican then a Democrat. They spoke about many things in this session including a farm bill. They want to help the price of animal feed go down so that farm good's prices wouldn't increase. Some of the speakers were David Cicllina, Erik Paulsen, and Joe Wilson. The HOR chamber has an American flag behind the Speaker of the House with the representatives below him.

  12. First off, everything is controlled by the speaker of the house, who is Republican John A. Boehner. Next, Rev. Patrick Conry led everyone in prayer. In my opinion, this could become very conversial because there is a necessity for seperation of church and state. Among the many topics that were discussed, one revolved around supporting our troops as well as the war in Israel. Each speaker, Democrats and Republicans, only have one minute to speak. The time alotted can make it difficult for people to get all their points across effectively. On the other hand, I feel that the session was very dragged out, and I am unsure of why the representatives faced the opposite direction of the speaker. Communication may not be complete this way.

  13. The session is started out with the speaker of the house introducing a man to start a prayer. The reverend is is Patrick J. conroy. The rep from south California then talks about the terrorist attack that had taken place on September 11,2012 he also start asking questions that will soon be answered. I then skipped to like 1 hour into the video and the representative of Indiana was speaking how Russia can help create jobs in the united states. I don't think that will work because i feel like Russia maybe would not want to help us because there concerned about there economy. I found the HOR chamber in capital hill pretty cool it reminded me of a mini stadium with alot of chairs and the middle of the floor was like where everything happend.

  14. The session starts off with Rev Patrick Conroe introducing a prayer. The speaker of the house is john a Boehner. Each side gets a minute To talk. Joe Wilson talks about what happened on sep 11 2012 that it was an organized attack that lasted for 6 hours. Rep David Cicilline talks about the ones who have sacrificed for their country. Rep Ted Poe talked about Isreal and how the terrorists are committing a double war crime. They had to stop because the house was not in order for rep Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Rep Dennis j Kucinich talks about child obesity and wants to protect children and for poor nutrition to not be advertised. I agree with this I think that it is very good that child obesity is being recognized because so many children are in danger from this with so many diseases available.

  15. the speaker of the house john a. boehner starts off the session. a prayer is said which doesn't make too much sense to me because of the separation of church and state. 9/11/12 was discussed because the american embassador in libya was killed. each speaker was allotted 1 minute to speak. these kind of things bore me i dont know how anyone could ever work in congress

  16. A very lengthy Prayer and the Pledge of Allegence is said at the begining. Many areas were discussed durring the meeting and each repersenitve had one minute each to speek. I watch about 45 minutes of this and it was really bouring, somewhat interesting but pretty much boring.

  18. In the beginning they started off with a prayer. Reverend Patrick J. Conry lead in prayer. John A Boehner(Republican), Speaker of The House, began the session by introducing House Chaplain then The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the governor of California. The first issue that was brought up was about the attack that happened in Libya, the American Ambassador being killed which happened on September 11, 2012. This whole video was just boring, I couldn't keep up with it after awhile. I constantly skipped through most of it. I thought these things were suppose to be at least somewhat interesting.

  19. The beginning of this video began with a prayer spoken by Rev. Patrick J. Corny. The session was run by the speaker of the house. The Pledge of Alligiance was spoken ny the Governor of California. Each representative spoke for a minute on their points on many different topics. One topic at stuck out to me was the killing of the Embassador in Libya on September 11th, 2012. Other representatives touched topics such as child obesity and showed us what the House of Reps chamber looks like. It was cool to look and ne inside of the chambers. This video did bore me for the most part though.

  20. The session was structured by the speaker of the house, Republican John A. Boehner. He told every represenative in the HOR how much time would be given to them in their opportunity to speak on what issues came up. One of the bills that were mentioned is called the Farm Bill. It's purpose is to prevent farm goods' prices from going up by decreasing the price of animal feed. This would benefit the farmers. I never knew how much effort and thought went into making a law. It didnt seem like something so complicated especially hearing about some of the ridiculous laws out there (cough cough: porcupine x_x ) The HOR room didnt surprise me much. It was a big court room with a huge American Flag in the back. What was cool was the "tower" of speakers/representatives with the different levels. Kind of reminded me of the hiearchy pyramids.

  22. First the Speaker of the house talks (John A. Boehner, Republican), next was a prayer which i found a little odd because i guess everyone there is catholic. Of course they said the pledge and each representative shared their ideas. Democrats sit on the left, Republicans on the right. To be honest with you I didn't really pay attension, my boredum got the best of me and i zoned out for a while. After that i just could not focus, I will not be a congress woman for sure.

  23. The session was constructed by the speaker of the house, who is John A. Boehner. Boehner is a republican. In this session, a bill was introdueced called the Farm Bill. The purpose of this bill is to prevent farm goods' prices from going up by decreasing the price of animal feed. I found it weird when they did a prayer though. I would think some are non- catholic... but who knows!

  24. The session was structured by the speaker of the house John A. Boehner. John Boehner directed each representative to speak and he told them how long they can speak for. A Republican from the right side would get up and talk and then a Democrat from the left would speak. Many things were discussed during this session like Libya, a farm bill and money. Something unique about the HOR is how each representative is timed and the speaker of the house tells them how long they can speak, I also found it nice that they prayed before the session began. The HOR chamber is sort of scary looking, its big and dark and looks boring. One thing I found weird was in the beginning when a lady walked in with a pole with an eagle on it I think

Republican Joe Wilson from South Carolina talked about the terrorism that occured on September 11,2001.The Democrat David Cicillina from Rhode Island discussed the veterans and the support that citizens should give them. The HOR in Capital Hill is a large room with seating on the top for the speaker of the house followed by the representivties underneath.

  26. The session is structured by giving each representative time to speak, it's very similar to a debate. With their time they speak on behalf of issues of their own concern that they would like to shed light on or bring forth things that they think should happen or change, and so on. Those speaking are all of the representatives from different places, and the speaker of the house. The way this assembly is put together is a very rigid, organized event and it seems that no time is wasted. The House of Reps in Capital Hill is a large room and the sides are designated to political parties.

    1. Shannon Hayes-
The meeting starts with the speaker of the house introducing a bill and beginning discussion. The speaker speaks on behalf of the house of representatives. The big room is seperated on two sides according to political parties and views. Opinions are voiced and we see the differences and some are very alike

Democrat David Cicillina from Rhode Island spoke about veterians. He thinks people should recognize them for all they have done for our country. They deserve more support then what they are recieving.
