Gun Control and the 2 Amendment

The day following the horrible massacre in Sandy Hook Elementry School many people are calling for gun control measures. I would like you to start a discussion about gun control in the comment area. I would like you to look up the statistics (accurate) regarding deaths by guns in other countries and state your opinion and stance on this current issue. Please respond to others comments on this site.

  1. Schools should have secruity gards in the building for protection. Schools should also have camaras around the building exspecially on th outside and all the doors should be locked after children get in school.

Most states state that everyone has the right to bear arms in a act of denfence. I belive this is okay but they need certian laws stating that guns should not be used as act of violence or hatred torwards others.

    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/injury.htm
    In the United States
    All firearm deaths
    •Number of deaths: 31,347
    •Deaths per 100,000 population: 10.2

    http://www.cdc.gov/MMWR/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5002a1.htm
During 1993--1998, an estimated average of 115,000 firearm-related injuries (including 35,200 fatal and 79,400 nonfatal injuries) occurred annually in the United States. Males were seven times more likely to die or be treated in a hospital ED for a gunshot wound than females. The proportion of firearm-related injuries that resulted in death increased from younger to older age groups. Approximately 68% of firearm-related injuries for teenagers and young adults aged 15--24 years were from interpersonal violence, and 78% of firearm-related injuries among older persons aged >65 years were from intentionally self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Black males aged 20--24 years had the highest average annual fatal (166.7/100,000 population) and nonfatal (689.4/100,000 population) firearm-related injury rates during the 6-year period. Although 51.4% of intentionally self-inflicted nonfatal wounds were to the head or neck, 71.8% of unintentional and 45.8% of assault-related nonfatal wounds were to the extremities. During the 6-year period, estimates are that quarterly fatal firearm-related injury rates declined 29.3%, and quarterly nonfatal firearm-related injury rates declined 46.9%. Firearm-related injury rates declined for intentionally self-inflicted, assault, and unintentional causes.

  2. The incident that occurred at sandy hook elementary was a tragic event that devastated the lives of many families of Newtown CT. The 26 deaths were all due to the fact that a young man got his hands on a gun, which resulted in the death of many innocent lives. Statistics state that out of every one hundred people, eighty eight people own a gun. The United States of America has the highest gun ownership in the world. The US needs to make several changes to protect the lives of innocent amercians when it comes to gun control. Sadly, some families of Newtown have to spend the christmas season have to burying their loved ones

http://www.gun-control-network.org/GF01.htm that website shows the percentage of death cause by fire arms. switzerland is the highest and netherlands and poland are the least.

  3. The sandy hook elementary shooting was such a tragedy. I honestly could say everyone was affected by this. A young man got this hands on a gun and ended up taking lives of innocent people. The US estimated that there are 283 million guns in civilian hands. The USA has 10,000 gun homicides. 79% of americans support handguns. I think this percentage will change because of this awful situation. The US needs to help protect the lives of innocent people. I honestly do not know what could be done but something does need to change.

I believe what occurred in Sandy Hook just the other day was heartbreaking and such a violent act. Seeing something like that occur, make one realize that maybe the US is alittle too lenient when it comes to possessing a gun. It has become way to easy to have one in your possession. Although people should be allowed to have one because it is their right, it is still very dangerous and background checks should be made. I dont believe anyone but the purchaser of the gun should be in control of it. Purchased guns should be stressed to have full security in a household or wherever they are and proof of security.

  4. The tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook elementary honestly affected everyone across the country. It completely breaks my heart that instead of celebrating the Holidays, people will be burying their loved ones. I'm not sure if gun control is really to blame in this situation though, considering that he had the gun illegally. Personally, I think we need a better mental health care system because there was obviously something mentally wrong with him if he was capable of looking at terrified children and pulling the trigger.

According to the Washington Post, the United States has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world. We have a pretty bad reputation for gun violence among peaceful nations like Canada. 60% of United States homicide occur with the use of a firearm. The countries with the most guns don't necessarily have the most gun related homicides, but America still sees far more gun violence than all of the other countries who have high rates of gun ownership.

But I also think that schools should be more secure. This guy literally just walked in. Granted that he was the son of a teacher that worked there, so he was able to just casually walk in. I hope that after this tragedy schools are going to begin to heighten their security and be less trusting of the people that they are letting into their buildings. Unfortunately, I don't think massacres like this are ever going to completely stop, but they can be prevented.

  5. The Sandy Hook Elementary shootings are horrifying and breath-taking. This whole event made me speechless, because not one sane person would want to take life of innocent children, their mother, and even themselves. When people have easy access to guns, they feel a sense of empowerment and authority. However, the saying "Guns don't kill people, people kill people," is usually applicable. Most of the time, people who commit over 20 murders, are considered serial killers. There must have been some crucial experience in this man's life that scarred him and led him to insanity.

  6. The sandy hook elementary school tragedy has affected everyone. for a man to get his hands on a gun to shoot 20 innocent children, and his mother, and faculty members in the school is horrible. The children were still babies and had their whole life ahead of them, and didnt even know what was even going on. This should never even be a thought to happen again there should be multiple security guards in every school so nothing like this can ever happen again.

  7. The Sandy Hook elementary school shooting opened up everyones eyes. Parents should feel safe sending their children to school and this has made many parents question that. Even though this situation could've been avoided if schools took more precaution with security, theres nothing we can do now. Gun Control wouldn't have prevented this situation. Whether or not there are gun control laws, criminals dont follow the law anyway, thats why they're criminals. I think all schools should have security.

this website shows all the states in Americans statistics on gun crimes.

But either way Connecticut has one of the strictest gun control laws in the country and yet the shooter just took it from his mom.

  8. The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was tragic. The school did have a security system where the visitors are identified, then buzzed in, and the doors are locked at 9:30. Schools should have high security, but when dealing with children you don't want them to feel as though they're walking into a prison either. Before heightening school security, the country should make it harder to obtain firearms. In certain states people can walk into a Walmart and buy a gun. The second amendment is out of date; firearms are growing increasingly dangerous, passed the point the writers of the constitution could have ever imagined. Security is very important; especially when it's dealing with innocent children, but sometimes security fails and the only way to ensure children aren't being shot is to make stricter gun laws. The United States is fourth on a list stating the amount of murders with firearms by country.

  9. The Sandy Hook massacre was a tragic and mindless act which resulted in the death of 26 innocent people, 20 of whom were young children. The man responsible for this act used his mothers licensed guns to commit this tragedy. People have to understand that guns don't kill people, but people kill people. There are millions of Americans who own guns to protect themselves and their family, and just because mentally unstable people use guns improperly, does not mean the 2nd amendment should be changed.

Guns were used in 11,078 homicides in the U.S. in 2010, comprising almost 35% of all gun deaths, and over 68% of all homicides.

On average, 33 gun homicides were committed each day for the years 2005-2010.7

Regions and states with higher rates of gun ownership have significantly higher rates of homicide than states with lower rates of gun ownership

  10. The US has more gun ownership than most countries, and as for gun control the second amendment protects citizens rights to own a weapon, however, that was written in a time of revolution when the citizens would band together to form militias. Stricter controls have to be put into place, I don't believe any private citizen needs to own a semi automatic weapon. It's fine if you want to keep a rifle for hunting or a well secured hand gun for personal protection or if it's required for your job, but the weapons that were used in this massacre were just excessive. If you can limit the first amendment's freedom of speech by saying you cant shout fire in a movie theater or that some things must be censored, you can limit the second amendment of what kind of guns can be purchased and by whom. Just because we CAN buy an ak47 even though we live in cities and suburbs (and not in a war zone) doesn't mean we SHOULD. And unfortunately not many can speak out on this issue because the NRA is one of the biggest lobbyists and the foremost defenders of the second amendment, so if any politician or person of importance speaks against it in any way they're the first to try and take that person down, and are usually successful.

  11. The Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre was a horrible event that took place. This massacre happened because the use of guns. In my opinion I think all use of guns should be banned in the U.S. I understand that people use guns for safety but i think that if all guns are banned that our economy would be more safe. In the United states 33 gun homicides were committed each day for the years 2005-2010. In my opinion I think the amount of gun homicides would be much lower if guns were banned.

    ReplyDelete
  12. As studies have shown in recent years with statistics,an average would show that 33 gun homicides were committed each day for the years 2005-2010. I believe gun control should be more strict, but not banned. If all weapons gun alike were to be banned, only the law abiding citizens would be the most certain to be defenseless. Anyone who is in that dire of mental disorder or bent on that much hatred to wish to kill would find a way to follow out their evil action of murder one way or another, and taking away a possible defense for victims may not help anything any better. People who wish to kill and carry out such evil would not obey such a law and would find other means of obtaining their weapons, and making ownership illegal would make it more difficult for them, but if they are persistent, they may still obtain what they wish to carry out their actions with. However, I do believe in the right to bear arms, but I do not believe there is any reason to own assault rifles or any military based weaponry, whether it is for collecting nor hunting. Weapons should be more difficult to obtain, but not made impossible or illegal to.

  13. i believe that there should be stricter rules if you want to obtain a gun. i know that completely prohibiting them will only cause more problems. prohibition never works, because there will always be illegal ways to obtain things, and at least when things like guns are contained legally, theres records of who has what. it is unfortunate that guns fall into the hands of the wrong people that are mentally unfit to posses one. i definitely think that the rules should be changed at least a little bit this way it becomes a little harder for people who shouldnt have guns to have them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't think guns are the problem in the US, i think its the people who have the guns that are an issue. Lets face it, if you ban guns they will still be sold illegally on the streets like they are now. It has been proven before, banning things just gives criminals more jobs. People willing to buy guns legally should be interviewed first to check for mental stability as opposed to a written test because anyone can lie on paper. Face to face a professional may be able to tell if someone's "a little off".

    ReplyDelete
  15. I do believe that guns are a problem in the US today because of how easy it is for someone to get one in their possession. From many past experience tragedies, the one holding the gun was not licensed for it. I believe that the US has to make stricter laws for gun control. States that allow gun licenses in my opinion are stupid, if someone wants a gun whether they are licensed or not they are obviously willing to kill someone in some sort of case, whether its for no reason or self defense.. If no one was allowed to have a gun, there would be less devastating incidents. The only reason i could imagine someone needing a gun would be for self defense but if gun control was more strict and no one was allowed to have one in their possession, then there wouldn't be a gun needed while defending yourself.

  16. To start off my discussion, I think that it is disguisting that those children and teachers were murdered.they were innocent children stripped away from their lives and families because of this man. The possession that this man had over the gun he used was unacceptable. I feel like the gun control over America should be a lot more stricter. I personally believe that owning a gun should not be acceptable to anyone other than a police officer or someone at war. When people say that they need a gun for protection, it is stupid, because if no one had a gun, then they wouldn't need it for protection. There are countries all over the world that contain as much killings from unsafe gun control in a year, than we did in just that one day in Connecticut. America should really reflect on their situation and start making laws to help and protect the people.

  17. I think this was a tragedy. All schools should have a security guard. One that can actually help if something goes wrong and can actually run after someone, not one that can barely walk and need a walker or something. Security guards should be mandatory in every school especially after this tragedy. I think immediately after the first class starts the front door should be locked. just anyone should be able to buy a gun. Purchased guns should be People that buy guns should have background checks. Kids should not have access to parents guns. The guns should be locked up, and they should be in children's reach.

  18. In my opinion what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary school was disgusting and a tragedy. it is sad that so many innocent people and children lost their lives because of a careless person who gave access to deadly weapons to a person with a disability. I think that something needs to be done about this and control with guns and who can buy them. there should be a long and annoying process to even be able to purchase a gun so that it discourages people because they dont want to do the work. but there should also be security guards in school and more protection for our countries youth. the statistics for how many people have been killed by gun violence is unfair and need to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I believe no one should have the right to "bear arms." Its so annoying to thinkthat people have to resort to guns for self defense. If people would all be civil with eachother than people wouldn't have to use self defense. But thats only in a perfect world. What happened at Sndy Hook was horrible. How can someone even think of killing a bunch of little elementary school students?

  20. What happened at Sandy Hook Elementary school was just tragic, those kids and teachers went way too soon especially to die in that way. One gun that was used in the massacre was a high powered rifle. I understand that we have the right to bear arms but why do you need a rifles in our hands. There should be gun control, any type of high powered rifle or any type of gun that should be used in the army should not be put in the hands of American citizens even if they pass a whole bunch of tests. Even though some people are complaining that guns shouldn’t be allowed now, it would contradict with our constitution. Everyone should have the right to defend themselves. There should be security at every school but reality that just won’t happen, there’s not enough money, or either someone would complain about something else. This event was unexpected, most events like this are unexpected but all we can do is try to make the process of getting a gun harder to get. Let’s face it, this is America, nothing will pass about guns for a number of months, maybe even years. I believe incidents like this will get played off, the government won't bring these events back up, look at what happened at Virginia Tech or Columbine, not once have I seen the government do anything about the gun problem or even talk about it. What makes you think they will change anything this time?

Violent crime rates have been falling in recent years, but the number of people killed by guns in the United States is still high. According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report, between 2006 and 2010 47,856 people were murdered in the U.S. by firearms, more than twice as many as were killed by all other means combined.

  21. I find th tragedy that occurred to be just awful. The fact that a person could go into an elementary school and murder innocent kids sickens me. I think the United States should have a better gun control policy because it really is a problem. The US has the greatest gun ownership rate in the world, roughly 88 people out of 100 own a gun. The US doesn't have the highest death rate because of guns, but it is one of the top countries. If the US was to control the use of guns more there would be a lot less deaths because of it. The fact that Adam Lanza was able to get a hold of four guns to use is unbelievable, there should've been more restrictions.

  23. what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary school was disgusting. it is sad that innocent adults and children lost their lives because of a random person who had access to a weapon.i think this was stupid and pointless. If someone is "crazy" why would you give them a gun to begin with? what happened to these little children and faculty is terrible and could of been prevented if there was better security in schools.

  24. The Sandy Hook tragedy caused a lot commotion over gun control rights. Obviously this could've been prevented if that one family didn't own guns. Unfortunately there hasn't been a clear cut way to make sure things like this can't happen. There are many rules for everything, but there are always those who can cut around corners and somehow get their way no matter what. I don't have the perfect solution, but it's a definite that gun control needs to be improved. Where less people own guns. Making the process of owning a gun more tedious and annoying may be an improvement to discourage people from trying to get one.

  25. The tragedy at Sandy hook elementary school caused the world to be shooken up and now much more on guard for their children. I do not think it is the gun that kills, it's the person shooting. Whether or not the person shooting the gun has a mental disorder is irrelevent to the crime committed. Shooting a baby in the face is not normal and this is why guns should not be allowed in everyone's home. The people in places like conneticut and more rural areas want to keep their doors unlocked, but yet keep a gun in the house. Why can't they just lock their doors and have no gun? This is why things like this do not happen in New York or suprise us because we are so much more on huard than other places; we would never sleep with our doors unlocked.

  26. What happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School was terrible and such a tragedy. All of those innocent children and teacher's lost their lives for no reason. I believe no one should have the right to bear arms unless they are a policer officer. If your average person cannot own a gun then you will not have to worry about someone with a mental disorder ever getting the chance to have a gun. If they drastically increase the price of bullets then someone may not be able to aford to have a gun.

  27. I do truly believe that the massacre rthat occured at the Sandy Hook Elementary School was very tragic. I do believe that gun law should be more regulated and more strictly enforced. I do not believe that people should surrender their legal guns because it is opart of our constitution. You can not take guns away from every body just because of a few tragedies that occur every year.

  28. Sandy Hook Elementary was a horrific accident. But in reality, I have a different view on things like this. To be honest, I often wonder why accident like this don't happen more often. Statistics show that over 200 million people in America own a fire arm. Statistics also show that one out of every five people in america suffer from some sort of mental illness. When you put these two together, it is a recipe for catastrophe.

    - sandy hook shotting was a tradegy that showed how gun control needs to be controlled. This had an effect on everyone in the country. Gun control has a big impact on the United States because now a days people are using guns more often .
The US has the highest gun ownership rate in the world - there are 89 guns for every 100 Americans, compared to 6 in England and Wales.

And the murder figures themselves are astounding for Brits used to around 550 murders per year. In 2011 - the latest year for which detailed statistics are available - there were 12,664 murders in the US. Of those, 8,583 were caused by firearms.

Last two presidents have been slowly taking our rights away with acts like NDAA,HR 645, patriot act,and extraterritorial patriot act. U.N. arm trade treaty if passed in march will not allow any american citizen have guns. “Section III, Paragraphs 7 and 8 of the Program of Action mandate that if a member state cannot get rid of privately owned small arms legislatively, then the control of “customs, police, intelligence, and arms control” will be placed under the power of a board of UN bureaucrats operating out of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs,” Countries that have full guns bans have higher rating crime because the criminals know that no ones armed to protect themselves. Only the law abiding citizen suffers from a ban of guns.
